Philadelphia Bar Association Condemns Violence at the U.S. Capitol

Lauren P. McKenna, Esq., Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association, issued the following statement condemning the violence in Washington, D.C. today:

“The Philadelphia Bar Association strongly and unequivocally condemns the assault on the certification of the 2020 Presidential election that is taking place at the U.S. Capitol and in Washington, D.C. today, and the violence and disruption that followed.

“As members of the legal community, we recognize our commitment to uphold the rule of law. Indeed, upon admission to practice, we swear an oath to “support, obey and defend” the U.S. Constitution and that of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Intrinsic to that obligation is to speak out when the rule of law and the tenets of our democracy are challenged, and when there are efforts to override the will of the people and the fair outcome of our electoral process.

“The peaceful transfer of power from one elected president to the next is a critical aspect of our democracy. This is a national crisis. We call on President Trump and our other elected officials to uphold our shared mission and obligation to adhere to the Constitution, protect the rule of law, and support a peaceful transfer of power. It is incumbent on us to protect these fundamental principles of our democracy.”
