A Unified Statement from the Philadelphia Legal Community

In an effort spearheaded by the Philadelphia Bar Association's Diversity in the Profession Committee, we make the following statement in reaction to the fatal shooting of Walter Wallace, Jr.:

The undersigned organizations stand with the Barristers' Association of Philadelphia, one of our member organizations, in echoing their statement about the fatal shooting of Walter Wallace, Jr. by Philadelphia police. We send our deepest condolences to his family.

We call for the Philadelphia Police Department to commit to training directed to address implicit biases, including those related to race, gender, sexual identity, and religion. We further call for training directed to interactions with those suffering from mental illness. We call for the development and implementation of law enforcement procedures that prioritize de-escalation and community policing.

We stand for the principle that a civil society demands that law enforcement must be applied fairly and equally regardless of race.
