2020 PA Bar Exam to be Done Remotely in October

In light of continued concerns of the spread of COVID-19, the Board of Law Examiners, with the approval of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, has decided to administer a remote bar exam in lieu of an in-person exam. Prohibitions on large gatherings; staffing requirements and other challenges of social distancing protocols for such a large number of people; the number of venues and the tremendous space necessary; and ensuring the health and safety of applicants, proctors and staff required the Board to make this decision.

This remote exam will be administered over three days, on October 5th, 6th and 7th. It will include the entire Pennsylvania written component (performance test and six essays) as well as 100 MBE questions. There are no other changes to the exam content.

Board staff will transfer all applications for the September in-person administration to the October remote administration. Applicants currently registered to take the exam by handwriting must inform the Board of their interest in typing and paying the computer-based testing fee (CBT) for the remote exam or have their application transferred to the next in-person administration.

See the attached letter for additional details.
