Chancellor Urges Legislature to Prevent Gun Violence

On the eve of March for Our Lives 2018, Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Mary F. Platt issued the following statement:

“This is a pivotal time in our nation’s history and our legislators should not ignore the urgent need to take action to curb gun violence in our schools and in our communities. Legislation is imperative to help prevent these tragedies from occurring and protect public safety. In the past, the Philadelphia Bar Association supported the extension of the federal Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Act (a/k/a the Federal Assault Weapons Ban) that expired in 2004 and other legislation regulating guns. Gun violence is impacting and shaping the lives of our children right now. I commend and support the students and families who are marching to demand that their lives and safety become a priority. Their activism demonstrates a remarkable level of civic engagement and a commitment to improve society that will benefit our democracy in the years to come.”
