Chancellor Mourns NYC Terrorist Victims, Defends Justice System

In light of the Oct. 31 terrorist attack in New York City and the comments made regarding justice in our country during yesterday’s White House Cabinet meeting, Chancellor Deborah R. Gross issued the following statement on behalf of the 12,000 members of the Philadelphia Bar Association:

“We are deeply saddened by this cowardly attack and mourn those who were killed and injured. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.

“Additionally, our justice system should be applauded for rising above political considerations and providing all defendants with due process in a fair and transparent environment. Our Constitution guarantees certain rights, which include the right to a jury trial, which is one of the things that make us unique as a country and for which we should be proud.

“Our justice system is not a ‘laughingstock’ and deserves respect and admiration. It is an independent, coequal branch of government, crucial to the rule of law."
