Philadelphia Bar Association Rates Judicial Candidate, Expands Process

The Philadelphia Bar Association announces its first rating of a candidate in the 2017 judicial election, as well as enhancements to its Commission on Judicial Selection and Retention. The Commission recently held its first meeting and issued a “Recommended” rating to Anthony G. Kyriakakis, Esq., a candidate for judge of the Court of Common Pleas.

“We are delighted to announce that moving forward, we will be communicating ratings on a rolling basis to better inform voters in a timely manner,” said Eric Weitz, chair of the Commission.

Additionally, for the first time, the Commission will evaluate candidates for Pennsylvania’s appellate courts, provided they have their principal office or chambers in Philadelphia, in addition to evaluating candidates for judge of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas and judge of Municipal Court.

“Our appellate courts render decisions that impact the lives of all Pennsylvanians. We believe it is our responsibility as the voice of Philadelphia’s legal community to provide unbiased, nonpartisan information about the candidates,” said Philadelphia Bar Association Chancellor Deborah R. Gross.

The Commission has set an absolute deadline of March 7, 2017, to submit a completed candidate questionnaire and writing samples to the Philadelphia Bar Association. Any candidate who fails to submit by the deadline will automatically receive a “Not Recommended” rating.

The Commission conducts a thorough investigation of candidates for judicial office and evaluates them on criteria such as legal ability, trial experience, temperament, integrity and a devotion to the improvement of the quality of justice. Based on these criteria, candidates are rated as “Highly Recommended,” “Recommended” or “Not Recommended” for the benefit of the voting public.

Candidates may obtain a questionnaire by visiting or by contacting Director of Public and Legal Services Charles J. Klitsch at 215-238-6326 or
